Futurama Depicts the Year 3000

Philip J. Fry is a twenty-five-year-old pizza delivery boy who accidentally freezes himself on December 31, 1999. When he wakes up one thousand years in the future he goes to work for the Planet Express Corporation, a futuristic delivery service that transports packages to all of the universe. His companions include the delivery ship’s Captain, Leela, a one-eyed female alien who kicks serious ass, and Bender, a robot with human tendencies.

In one of the episode of Futurama, the world is expecting a huge trash asteroid from the year 1999 to return from space and destroy Earth. No one can figure out how to destroy the asteroid, but Fry does. He wants to fight trash with trash, unfortunately the year 3000 everything is recycled and biodegradable, therefore there is no more trash on Earth!

Fry explains how easy it is to create trash and encourages New New York, yes New New York to liter and form another trash asteroid. They call it New New York, because the original New York is now the the sewer system where mutans live.

I would love to hope that in year 3000 we are sustaining the human population in a way that benefits our world. It truly gave me hope when watching this episode of the possibility of a recyclable and biodegradable solution to our ever growing one plastic use problem. On top of endless amounts of other problems concerning how we use and treat our Earth.

I wish I knew what it would be like to live in 3000 and watch Futurama. This show is a time capsule for how 1,000 years earlier we depicted our future. It is a great comedy and cartoon that shows us the possibilities of the future and I hope if you haven’t watched it before, you find time to do so.

  1. I find it interesting how there’s shows out there that seem to be predicting the future. I hear more from the Simpsons than any other show and it’s mind blowing that they predicted some of the events. Also, I loved watching Futurama. It was just a funny and entertaining show, but definitely I shouldn’t of been watching at such a young age lol.

    1. I agree as I have seen many conspiracy theories covering the Simpsons and how they have accurately portrayed the future. I too watched it at a young age, but have been viewing it as an adult recently and fully enjoy it since I understand more of the innuendos.
