Still, You Feed us Lies From the Tablecloth

System Of A Down – B.Y.O.B.

Let’s rewind to the year 2005 when the eruption of Guitar Hero crashed through the homes of families and youth. This created a breakout of competitions around the world.

Now if you remember Guitar Hero World Tour, which was released in 2008, you know System Of A Down – B.Y.O.B. is the last song needed to complete the game. Which is insanely hard if you didn’t know; listen to the song above.

Guitar Hero became the outlet we needed. Not only in our home lives, but in other activities, such as after school programs. I mean c’mon this revolutionized babysitting, as we know it, worldwide.

We all remember playing so much our eyes burned, our fingers cramped and we were ridiculously dehydrated. Something we didn’t understand as young rapscallions.

Thanks to Guitar Hero, we were all under the impression we had learned how to play the guitar and that local agencies would be scouting us at our mid-level competitions. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case and most of still have no idea how to play an actual guitar.

As we matured, most of us grew out of the video game stage and started applying our minds to other hobbies. But if Guitar Hero taught us anything, it was to appreciate the classics.

We understand the hair band, grunge and metal eras which led us to some of today’s better music. Prepare to be introduced to a modern day band, with strong hair band references.

Greta Van Fleet – Highway Tune

I give you, Greta Van Fleet. Now, if you are familiar than you have heard the song above, but if not LISTEN TO IT NOW.

Produced in 2017, this young boy band, if you will, skyrocketed modern day rock. With notes that reflect that of Led Zeppelin, a style over 30 years old now has once again come full circle, much like most trends.

Now, if it weren’t for Guitar Hero, who helped us understand hair bands, grunge and metal, we wouldn’t have the ability to hear these innuendos in today’s music.

The overall rock trend fell after the death of Kurt Cobain, but if you search hard enough you can find traces of those we loved, even in modern music today.

For instance:

Motionless in White resembles not only physically but lyrically to Marilyn Manson

The band Operator sounds almost identical to the one the only Chris Cornell

The band Deaf Pedestrians sounds an awful like the Toadies

Kurt and I are basically the same person

And that is why this blog is called Still, You Feed us Lies From the Tablecloth.

The list could go on… and I would love for it too!

Comment on some bands below of who you think sound similar.

  1. I can hear a lot of song riffs and what not in a lot of other bands music. I think it’s because of a band is listening to another band when they are writing and recording it just naturally bleeds into the music. I’ve often wondered if there is truly anything that “has never been done before” in any genre of music.

    1. It’s not even that I think these bands have similar song riffs. I generally think their voices sound familiar, like they are the same person. Like I told Professor Hanson, it’s not that I don’t like these similarities, I love them actually!

      1. Entirely hope I wasn’t coming off snotty. I agree some times the similarities are awesome, other times I am wishing they would branch out more. I call it my “theory of a dead soundgarden planting peal jam with the papa roaches” thesis

  2. I still don’t get the Still, You Feed us reference, but that’s probably because I’m old.

There are only so many basic chord progressions that fit into rock music, so songs from a range of eras will inevitably start sounding like each other.

There was a long running battle over the intro guitar part to Stairway to Heaven, and whether it was stolen, but the court eventually ruled essentially that you can’t copyright a descending chromatic scale…

Really enjoyed reading this. Good potential for column material.

    1. The reason I referenced B.Y.O.B.’s lyric “still you feed us lies from the table cloth” is because I feel like those who sound similar are essentially feeding us lies we can clearly see. Although I list three bands which sound familiar, I love them anyway. It’s a play on words as if I like to be lied too. LOL

  3. I really appreciate this post. In this day in age, it seems as if the once great rock and roll sound has been quickly plunged off the metaphorical cliff. It just seems that the rock and roll sound that was once in existence, is no longer. I was a huge fan of guitar hero and am hoping to get my hands back on it one day. Thank you for this list of bands that you put together, I will definitely have to give them a listen. Especially if one of them has a similar voice to Chris Cornell. Great song choice in B.Y.O.B by the way. You can never go wrong with System of a Down.

  4. I’m still waiting for a new S.O.a.D. album. I used to play Guitar Hero and Rock Band all the time when I was a kid, and I think it really helped me appreciate rock music more. That being said, I can recognize specific sounds and techniques from bands now just from the first few notes. I’m not sure if you’ve heard Green Day’s newest album, but I think it sounds a lot like newer Weezer and Fall Out Boy albums, which kinda makes me sad since Green Day had such a distinguishable sound.
